Universal Abilities in Guilty Gear Strive

Tension and Roman Cancels

Tension builds from movement, attacking, and blocking. Spend it on Roman Cancels, Faultless Defense, Overdrive specials, and certain character mechanics. RC colors define use cases — see our Roman Cancel guide for depth.

Overdrive (OD) specials cost 50% tension and add properties like wall break or extended hitstun. Managing tension between offense and defense separates floor players from higher ranks.

Defensive Universal Tools

Faultless Defense pushes attackers away at tension cost. Instant Block (blocking just before impact) grants tension and reduced pushback. Yellow RC creates space during block stun. Psych Burst provides invulnerable escape when cornered.

Counter Blitz (Season 5) spends Burst gauge during counter-hit slowdown for a follow-up strike, replacing Wild Assault from prior seasons.

Offensive Universal Tools

Wild Assault is removed in 2.00 — learn Counter Blitz routes instead. Dash macros, IAD approaches, and wall break positioning remain universal offensive pillars. Positive Bonus rewards aggressive play with hidden damage bonuses until you get hit.

Throws beat block. Strike-throw mix is universal — lab tick throw ranges after learning your character's gatling frame advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What builds tension fastest?
Active offense and successful Instant Blocks. Passive play risks negative penalty.
Can every character wall break?
Most heavy hits and Overdrives can break walls when positioned correctly.
Is Instant Block mandatory?
Helpful but timing-heavy. FD is easier for beginners needing space.
How does Positive Bonus work?
Granted for aggressive play; increases damage until you take a clean hit.
Where did Wild Assault go?
Removed in Version 2.00. Use Counter Blitz on counter hits instead.
