Roman Cancel Guide for Guilty Gear Strive
Roman Cancel Fundamentals
Roman Cancel (RC) is Strive's signature meter system. Press any three attack buttons except Dust while spending 50% Tension to cancel actions that normally cannot be canceled. Each RC color depends on your state: Red during hit or block stun, Purple during active frames, Blue in neutral, Yellow while blocking.
Every RC emits a shockwave that slows the opponent briefly, extending combo and pressure opportunities. Season 5 patch notes adjusted Purple RC and removed some legacy options like throw RC and backdash RC — always confirm routes against battle version 5.00 rules.
When to Use Each Color
Red RC (RRC) extends combos after specials on hit or block — classic example is making unsafe reversals safe on block. Blue RC (BRC) creates mixups from neutral, passes through projectiles when timed with movement, and enables instant overhead setups. Purple RC (PRC) covers whiffed normals with long recovery. Yellow RC (YRC) pushes attackers away during block stun, similar to a defensive burst.
Fast Roman Cancel cancels the RC animation early, conserving tension and preserving momentum — critical for high-level pressure. Drift RC adds directional movement during the cancel. Practice in Training Mode with Tension set to max and input history visible.
- Red — combo extension and safety on block
- Blue — neutral mixups and projectile phasing
- Purple — whiff coverage and pressure resets
- Yellow — defensive pushback while blocking
Season 5 RC Changes
Version 2.00 nerfed some Purple RC loop routes and removed throw RC entirely. Combo damage may drop if the RC shockwave hits the opponent during a string — avoid redundant RCs mid-combo. Positive Bonus interactions still reward aggressive RC usage but no longer snowball as hard as early Season 4.
